It  certainly has been a fun year seeing the workshops come alive, with  folks having fun picking up a needle to sew something from scratch. 

Veta  (sock crafter) has been conducting a couple of classes, and I'm still  quite in awe of how she makes her creatures. She kinda sculpts the  shapes of the animals as she goes along. Everything is so unplanned and  that makes creating fun 'cause with everything improvised, it gives students space to explore alternatives to what they would like present in their creations. 

Art should really be about what one wants to explore, apart from just learning how to make something from a template provided.

(Pictured  below, to the right: L's sock pig made for her friend, or so she told  us when signing up for the class. Last we heard, she couldn't bear to  give it away. Bwahaha!)

Every tree needs a doinky creature.

Grab one now, by the neck:

A chubby tree made using collected green coloured cotton tees...

 a beaver made using any clothing that was either yellow or brown in colour...

 a carrot made using collected orange cotton tees....

 a bearded santa made using any fabric that was red and white....

 and a hearty heart made using any fabric that was red in colour or floral-patterned.

 After collecting the fabrics and clothing to make these ornaments, they were rolled and baked in the oven at 130 degrees for 2 months, and out pops these chubby fellas!

Rejects

 Every year, a relatively large number of ornaments are made for Christmas. Ornaments  are fun, cool and completely functionless, but sometimes things have to exist for no reason at all. Perhaps they help elevate the meaning of other stuff like war, or the quantum theory, or why mole rats have no hair...etc etc. And every time handmade goods are made by the dozens,  there will always be that few rejects that don't make final cut...so a friend asks:

What happens to those Rejects?

Meet Jo.

Jo nearly made it to the finals. He was all stitched up, tattooed with beads and sewn with a row of perfect teeth. 

Say hello to Jo. 

Now say goodbye to Jo. His back was thinning out. The skin was just too thin and that is no good. 'Cause eventually, his insides will spill out. Nobody should have to purchase a gingerbreadman to see its insides spill out after one or two sessions decorating their home. 

So, Jo had to go. 

His body was dumped. Only someone crazy enough would know just what to do with the remains of Jo. 

 Perhaps you might know by now, the Doinky shop is all about recycling. We learn that philosophy from the great- 

Carrion Beetles.

Here is a rare capture of a carrion beetle checking out Jo's body. Just WHAT will it DO to Jo?

 Yes. It will...and it shall! The carrion beetle will lay its eggs inside Jo's dead body, its warm, furry, homely, dead insides of a body.

Upon hatching from their eggs, the larvae will consume the remains of Jo.

Nature, truly is, wonderful. 

As Jo's watches the larvae screw with his body from heavens above, he pukes a final buckload of blood. Disgusted at how the carrion beetle has totally f-ed him, Jo finally moves on to the light at the end of the tunnel to be reincarnated,

as a motherpooting carrion beetle.  

Now say hello to New Jo, the carrion beetle.

Gingerbreadman

This year's Gingerbread men were made with the assistance of 2 super pals, who helped sew the facial expressions to these gingerbread men.

Let's take a look at some of the goofy ones.

This one here is a sad-faced gingerbread man. 

He is channeling the why-did-you-chew-off-my-wiener look.

Next one, is a gingerbread man that resembles the character Sid, from the cartoon Ice Age. It is the eyes being so far apart and that wonky smile that did the trick, I think.

This one here is pretty regular,

except for his hot-cross-bun nose.

And this gingerbread man has a set of yellow teeth!

And I love this guy's queasy smile.

He could be drunk! 'Cause there's a strand of his hair (thread) flinging out, and one of his eyes is dented much further in, which gives that added loopy, high-on-corona appeal.

Who IS she?
Well if you have been through a semester in Art History, you might have seen her in original form (pictured below). Venus of Willendorf is a sculpture of a nude female figure made in oolitic limestone, and estimated to have been carved during the Stone Age. Some say she was perhaps made as a symbol of fertility (large boobs, abdomen and buttocks), while others thought she was just a portrait of an anonymous woman.

But I've always found her just too cute a bod to not take a second look. Maybe she really is just a portrait of a cute curvy lady from THE Stone Age. Maybe she was the carver's pregnant wife.

ANYWHO, she is now available in a pale blue crochet form at the Doinky Hut. Made by crochet guru Amy Lim!

Teacher's Day 
A group of Korean-language students had a tote made for their teacher in celebration of Teacher's Day. It is a small class of eight ladies, and beside their portraits are their embroidered names in Korean. A Portraiture Workshop with Joo

Joo will share with you some things to look out for when you are drawing someone. Learn to spot little quirks of a person that will look interesting on paper. Most important of all is to have fun and enjoy drawing!

Each session will include the following:
a) Learn to draw using bamboo nibs, using found images/photographs provided by Joo.
b) Learn to draw using brush and ink, using YOUR found images/photographs.
c) Learn to draw a person on the spot. Bring along a pal for this class and you could draw each other!

Title of this piece:
Turdy Snake Attacks Us

Made as an ode to all things brown, slimey, dirty and snakey (?), this piece is constructed using a bagful of recycled tees. The coiling snake wraps itself round a rock-like structure, symbolizing how the Wild will eventually come and get us for attacking their environment, hence the sort of strangling feel about it.

You feeling it?

Okay, that is crap. It really is just something I was trying out. I wanted to make a stool for children, but this is how it turned out. I do kinda like it, but it sure ain't a stool for kids.
It looks more like, like stool.

Okay! This piece passed the quality-check!
(under my very inspective eyeballs filled with bread crusts). And here is a little about it:
Pearl Spider Patchwork Vase is constructed using recycled fabrics and materials. A green spider with titty pearls (fake pearls) is hanging on for dear life, and because he is so nervous, he starts giggling. A butterfly rests right beside him, and she laughs at his nervousness. Across the two of them, an orange-pom-pom flower blooms.

Lesson behind this: Don't wear titty pearls.

A woodpecker has just bore a hole right through the vase, and an orange snake is creeping up to it. Around them are some wild yellow fungi blooming.Picture of a woodpecker I was using when
creating the patchwork vase:
Love its colors!
Especially its spotty wings and beautiful sleek hair-do.

And this is a picture of yellow fungi growing on deadwood.
Seeing that tiny orange worm beside the yellow fungi,
got me adding this orange snake on the patchwork vase.
He has a mildly sinister eye.

ALL custom orders received after the 18th May will be created when I am back from my sewing break. Rush orders, sudden orders (birthday-the-next day, etc) will unfortunately not be taken up.
